How can I support teachers this week?

  • Cafeteria Help--Check out this great video here.

  • Read with 1st & 2nd Graders! -  teachers need help working with our beginning readers whether its sounding out letters/words, phonemic awareness,  or even math skills, with both small groups or individual students, Contact Megan O'Leary if you can help in Spanish or English
  • Support Tech in 5th Grade - With the addition of 5 new Chromebooks Sr. Almazan's class will be able to have an entire center group where each student has their own computer! It will allow him to easily provide each student with time on the computer every day! Click here to support this class.
  • Check the Lost and Found for your missing items located by the cafeteria. There is also a small lost and found in the annex just inside the main entrance. Remember to always write your child's name inside their belongings!

How can I help my Beach School
Community this week?

Beach Room Parent Program
We're thrilled to announce the launch of the Beach Room Parent Program!

We have a number of fantastic parents who have volunteered to be the room parent in each classroom.  At its best, room parents:
  • Improve communications at Beach

  • Create community among families per grade level

  • Give teachers the space to focus on our kids

If you have any questions about: what's going on in the classroom (or on upcoming field trips), how you can volunteer your time, how to celebrate your child's birthday in the classroom...go to the room parent first and he/she can help guide you in the right direction.

We are still looking for room parents for Lockett and Piff if you know anyone!

Any questions about the program, please reach out to Judith Hochhauser Schneider (jhochhauser@gmail.com)

Donate to the school snack and school supply closet.

When snacks are running low, our teachers head to our snack closet.  Please consider donating snacks by dropping dairy and nut free snacks to the front office in the purple bin. Gift cards are welcomed too!

Volunteer with the Beach School Garden

The garden team had its first meeting of the school year in the garden. If you're interested in getting involved with the garden program this year, please email: mulysa@resiliencedesign.com or McKenzie (Garden teacher) mckenzie.mccann@student.prescott.edu

Donate K-2nd Boy's Pants or Shorts

Accidents happen.  We are in the season of puddles and there is a need for pants and shorts for the K-2 boys.  If you can contribute, please drop off in the front office or with Megan O'Leary.

Community Event Planner Wanted!

If you are interested in helping plan fun & inclusive community events at Beach, we are looking for someone to join our awesome PTA team! Please email PTA VP Melinda Mechling if interested.

Get to Know your Community

Playworks

Our School is lucky to pay for Playworks through funds raised by the PTA with events like the auction.  Playworks helps our kids stay active and develop life skills through Play.  We have a GREAT new Playworks coach you may have heard your kids talk about and her name is Molly.  Stay tuned for more information about why our teachers love Playworks.  Here is a message from Molly, our Playworks Coach,

Hello Beach! My name is Molly and I am so excited to be a part of your community this year as the Playworks Coach! In this role I will be at recess every day to ensure that all students have the opportunity for safe, healthy, and inclusive play. Playworks is a national nonprofit that believes in the power of play to bring out the best in every child. This is my second year as a Playworks Coach after graduating from University of Oregon in 2018.  For more information, please check out Playworks' site here.

Health Curriculum at Beach

Did you miss out on the information presented at last months PTA meeting? Do you want to learn more and get all your burning questions answered? Well here is your chance! Please join Susannah and Vanessa as they breakdown the K-5 Health Curriculum. They will explain what is taught at each grade level and why. Come ready to learn how you can support the curriculum at home and in the classroom.

Wednesday, October 16th at 6:30pm in the auditorium.

childcare available.

TAG Nomination Window

The TAG nomination window is open now until November 26th. Students who are already identified as TAG do not need to be re-nominated, though you may wish to nominate your student in an additional area if they aren’t identified yet. Students at any grade level can be nominated by parents or teachers to be considered for the Talented and Gifted program. Nomination forms in multiple languages are here: https://www.pps.net/Page/1546 . Please return them to your classroom teacher to fill out the teacher portion.

All second grade students in PPS will be screened for TAG eligibility in the area of Intellectual Giftedness in October using a universal non-verbal test – this will not impact students who already have an Intellectual TAG designation.

Questions? Email Beach TAG Coordinator Ayn Frazee afrazee@pps.net

The Garden Corner

For those I have yet to meet, my name is McKenzie McCann and I’m your School Garden Coordinator. If you see a mysterious person digging around in the garden beds or wandering aimlessly in the arboretum, it’s probably me.

During September, we had a record participation rate for Garden (Two) Week(s). Ask your children about the book I shared with them and the Garden Blessing/Song they may have learned. The Garden Team and PTA were also very excited to host the 1st Annual Harvest Social where we made apple cider, saved cardoon seeds, and broke bread together. Thank you to everyone who cooked, dined with us, and came out to play. I’d also like to extend a huge Thank You to the 20 people who came to our Fall Work Party where we wrestled our raspberries, collected windfallen apples for worms, cleared our potato bed, and harvested lots of goodies.

A special shoutout goes to Ms. Ali Piff’s class who harvested 13 lbs. of tomatoes, 1 lbs. of herbs (rosemary, sage, lavender, mint) and 4 oz. of flowers for the Food Pantry this month. The combined efforts of Ms. Laurel Hazzards, Ms. Jeannie Seymour, and Ms. Mila Edwards’ classes winnowed 8 oz. of sunflower seeds for us to donate as well. Thank you to Mr. Cameron Shaw and Ms. Christina Lockette’s classes for preparing the bedding for our worm bin.

In October our Thursday SUN afterschool program, lead by Autumn Webring, will begin.

With gratitude (and apples),

McKenzie McCann

Upcoming Fundraising Events
Fundraising events cost money and everyone is invited.  Our goal at fundraising events is to raise money for our community.

Some examples of what we spend the money on that we raise at our fundraising events: Chromebooks for our kids, Playworks Coach, donating to Fund For Portland Schools to fund our staff.  You can read more about Fund for Portland Schools here.

Restaurant Nights

We raise part of our money for the school through Restaurant Nights.  They are a great way to support our community financially because proceeds from attending and buying dinner goes to our school AND you get to hang out with the community.

October 10th 2019 Recap

Thank you to Anna Marquez for presenting to the Beach community about Collaborative Problem Solving (CPS). She introduced families to the principles of CPS and to practice using "Plan B", the backbone of CPS practice, where the focus is on supporting students to make changes in behavior through guided reflection.

Here's a short video Anna presented about empathy, which is at the heart of CPS practices.

Next PTA Meeting - November 13th

Grab dinner at Por Que No for your family, and then head over to the PTA meeting to hear from 2 Beach moms, and FACT Oregon representative about Inclusion, what that means, and what we can teach our children about how to be inclusive and kind to diverse learners.
