How can I support teachers this week?

  • Get to know your Teachers!  They filled out these great sheets so you can support just the way they want to be supported.

  • Cafeteria Help--Check out this great video here.

  • Read with 1st & 2nd Graders! -  teachers need help working with our beginning readers whether its sounding out letters/words, phonemic awareness,  or even math skills, with both small groups or individual students, Contact Megan O'Leary if you can help in Spanish or English

  • Help me give my students 5 Chromebooks to take them beyond the walls of our classroom as we study and read about different countries, communities, and cultures. With the addition of 5 new Chromebooks for Sr. Almazan we will be able to have an entire center group where each student has their own computer! It allows me to easily provide each student with time on the computer every day! My students will be able to practice literacy and math skills on web based programs, create projects, post on our class blog, and so much more. Thanks to the mobility of the devices, students can use them at their tables, at the rug, and we can bring them outside. I can place a computer at each table, allowing them to work in small groups, or we could even share them with another class. The possibilities are endless!

  • Check the Lost and Found for your missing items located by the cafeteria. There is also a small lost and found in the annex just inside the main entrance. Remember to always write your child's name inside their belongings!

Topic Talks with Principal Lisa Hawking

Topic Talks are a continuation of “Coffee with the Principal”.  The title “Topic Talk” better describes what we’ll do and why (described below).  We will also have Cafe en Espanol, scheduled for adjacent Fridays.

Dates and times for Topic Talks are:

  • This coming Friday, October 18, 2-3 pm
  • November 22, 9-10 a.m.
  • January 24, 9-10 a.m.
  • February 14, 9-10 a.m.
  • March 20, 9-10 a.m.
  • April 17, 9-10 a.m.
  • May 22, 9-10 a.m.

Dates for Cafe en Espanol are:

  • October 25
  • December 6
  • January 31
  • February 28
  • April 3
  • May 29

All Cafe en Espanol are facilitated by our wonderful Esther Romero, from 9-10 a.m. in the auditorium.

The goals for Topic Talks and Cafe en Espanol are communication and community building. We want to create a space for parents to receive some information about important school-related topics, and a space to hear from, learn from, and better know those of you who are able to attend.  (We regret this is not a time that works for many parents’ work schedules and hope that we’ll get to connect with you at evening events, around school such as at arrival or dismissal or in other ways-- please reach out if we can answer any questions or support you or your child.)

We would love to learn topics of interest from you. Topic Talk topics I’m planning so far include school survey and assessment data, student assessments overviews (MAP, Smarter Balanced, etc.), Social Emotional Learning, Restorative Justice & Collaborative Problem Solving.  This Friday’s topic is our 2019-20 School Goals including school data and team processes that led to their formation.

At Topic Talks we’ll meet in Circle. Circle work increases the generativity of a group of individuals, helping us find common knowledge and interests, and productive differences, to accomplish shared purposes. We’ll structure the ability for each person to have a turn to speak or listen, and also a structure at closing for collecting additional questions from you that I’ll either be able to answer quickly, or connect with you about later, depending on time.

I hope all parents will feel welcome to join us!

Sincerely, Lisa Hawking

TAG Nomination Window

The TAG nomination window is open now until November 26th. Students who are already identified as TAG do not need to be re-nominated, though you may wish to nominate your student in an additional area if they aren’t identified yet. Students at any grade level can be nominated by parents or teachers to be considered for the Talented and Gifted program. Nomination forms in multiple languages are here: https://www.pps.net/Page/1546 . Please return them to your classroom teacher to fill out the teacher portion.

All second grade students in PPS will be screened for TAG eligibility in the area of Intellectual Giftedness in October using a universal non-verbal test – this will not impact students who already have an Intellectual TAG designation.

Questions? Email Beach TAG Coordinator Ayn Frazee afrazee@pps.net

Upcoming Fundraising Events
Fundraising events cost money and everyone is invited.  Our goal at fundraising events is to raise money for our community.

Some examples of what we spend the money on that we raise at our fundraising events: Chromebooks for our kids, Playworks Coach, donating to Fund For Portland Schools to fund our staff.  You can read more about Fund for Portland Schools here.

Restaurant Nights

We raise part of our money for the school through Restaurant Nights.  They are a great way to support our community financially because proceeds from attending and buying dinner goes to our school AND you get to hang out with the community.

Thank you to Anna Marquez for presenting to the Beach community about Collaborative Problem Solving (CPS). She introduced families to the principles of CPS and to practice using "Plan B", the backbone of CPS practice, where the focus is on supporting students to make changes in behavior through guided reflection.

Here's a short video Anna presented about empathy, which is at the heart of CPS practices.
