What is Happening this Week?
- No school Monday the 11th
- Por Que No Restaurant Night Wednesday the 13th
- PTA meeting Wednesday the 13th 6pm
How can I support teachers this week?
- Get to know your Teachers! They filled out these great sheets so you can support just the way they want to be supported.
- Donate to our Fred Meyer Thanksgiving Fund. Every year, we help our community purchase their own Thanksgiving meals. This year, we want to give families gift cards to help them purchase what items are most meaningful to them. You can leave a check with your donation in the PTA Presidents box in the office or donate online here. https://beachpta.membershiptoolkit.com/form/m/101609
- Reading Help Needed Beach teachers have expressed a need for volunteer support in Reading. Your help will have a positive impact on Beach students, even if its just an hour a week. If you are interested in working one-on-one with students in our English classes, please contact Melanie Hammond or Melinda Mechling. We will provide a mini training in a Reading support program, and are working on setting up a schedule for those interested in volunteering.
- Ms. Piff's 5th Graders need our support! We are still in need of a room parent for Ms. Piff's 5th grade class - please let Ms. Piff know if you are interested in supporting her class. She is also trying to help her student have a successful learning environment. Check out her Donor's Choose page, and donate to support these awesome students!
Only $229 left to GO to support Sr. Almazan With the addition of 5 new Chromebooks for Sr. Almazan we will be able to have an entire center group where each student has their own computer! It allows me to easily provide each student with time on the computer every day! My students will be able to practice literacy and math skills on web based programs, create projects, post on our class blog, and so much more. Thanks to the mobility of the devices, students can use them at their tables, at the rug, and we can bring them outside. I can place a computer at each table, allowing them to work in small groups, or we could even share them with another class. The possibilities are endless!
- Check the Lost and Foundfor your missing items located by the cafeteria. The items are really starting to pile up! Please take a minute to check to see if your child's belongings are here. There is also a small lost and found in the annex just inside the main entrance. Remember to always write your child's name inside their belongings!

Heath Curriculum at Beach
We were so happy to welcome Vanessa and Susannah back to Beach. They took the time to go over what and how the health curriculum is taught in the PPS school system. The curriculum is relatively new and full of a lot of wonderful and thoughtfully collected information. If you would like to see what was at the 10/16 meeting please take some time to view the slide show. They also took some time to put together an amazing book and resource list that might be of help.
Below is the short video on Consent for Kids. It's is a resource they recommend for families if and when they would like to discuss affirmative consent with their kiddos. We encourage you to check in your with your child regularly to hear what they have been learning and how the teaching process is going.

Topic Talks with Principal Lisa Hawking
Topic Talks are a continuation of “Coffee with the Principal”. The title “Topic Talk” better describes what we’ll do and why (described below). We will also have Cafe en Espanol, scheduled for adjacent Fridays.
Dates and times for Topic Talks are:
- November 22, 9-10 a.m.
- January 24, 9-10 a.m.
- February 14, 9-10 a.m.
- March 20, 9-10 a.m.
- April 17, 9-10 a.m.
- May 22, 9-10 a.m.
Dates for Cafe en Espanol are:
- December 6
- January 31
- February 28
- April 3
- May 29
All Cafe en Espanol are facilitated by our wonderful Esther Romero, from 9-10 a.m. in the auditorium.
The goals for Topic Talks and Cafe en Espanol are communication and community building. We want to create a space for parents to receive some information about important school-related topics, and a space to hear from, learn from, and better know those of you who are able to attend. (We regret this is not a time that works for many parents’ work schedules and hope that we’ll get to connect with you at evening events, around school such as at arrival or dismissal or in other ways-- please reach out if we can answer any questions or support you or your child.)
We would love to learn topics of interest from you. Topic Talk topics I’m planning so far include school survey and assessment data, student assessments overviews (MAP, Smarter Balanced, etc.), Social Emotional Learning, Restorative Justice & Collaborative Problem Solving. This Friday’s topic is our 2019-20 School Goals including school data and team processes that led to their formation.
At Topic Talks we’ll meet in Circle. Circle work increases the generativity of a group of individuals, helping us find common knowledge and interests, and productive differences, to accomplish shared purposes. We’ll structure the ability for each person to have a turn to speak or listen, and also a structure at closing for collecting additional questions from you that I’ll either be able to answer quickly, or connect with you about later, depending on time.
I hope all parents will feel welcome to join us!
Sincerely, Lisa Hawking

TAG Nomination Window
The TAG nomination window is open now until November 26th. Students who are already identified as TAG do not need to be re-nominated, though you may wish to nominate your student in an additional area if they aren’t identified yet. Students at any grade level can be nominated by parents or teachers to be considered for the Talented and Gifted program. Nomination forms in multiple languages are here: https://www.pps.net/Page/1546 . Please return them to your classroom teacher to fill out the teacher portion.
All second grade students in PPS will be screened for TAG eligibility in the area of Intellectual Giftedness in October using a universal non-verbal test – this will not impact students who already have an Intellectual TAG designation.
Questions? Email Beach TAG Coordinator Ayn Frazee email@example.com

Upcoming Fundraising Events
Fundraising events cost money and everyone is invited. Our goal at fundraising events is to raise money for our community.
Some examples of what we spend the money on that we raise at our fundraising events: Chromebooks for our kids, Playworks Coach, donating to Fund For Portland Schools to fund our staff. You can read more about Fund for Portland Schools here.
We raise part of our money for the school through Restaurant Nights. They are a great way to support our community financially because proceeds from attending and buying dinner goes to our school AND you get to hang out with the community.
