Beach School Broadcast

November 22, 2019

What is Happening this Week?

—————————————————————————

How can I support teachers this week?

Thank you for considering a donation to the Beach after-school SUN enrichment program. We know how critical after school programming is to our students and families. We are grateful for the partnership with Self Enhancement Incorporated (SEI) who oversees and orchestrates the Beach SUN program. SEI does not charge a fee for the courses and its budget for classes is limited to serving 140 students.

With the assistance of grants, parents and PTA dollars we’ve been able to serve the growing demand for SUN programming, as shown by the 350 Beach students who participated last year.

With your help, we can continue to offset the cost of these courses, offer a wide variety of classes and serve students and families. Please keep in mind that a donation to the Beach SUN program does not guarantee any particular student’s enrollment or participation with SUN programs.

The suggested donation amount is $50 a class but any amount will help.

Click on this link to donate electronically (via the PTA Membership Toolkit) or write a check to Beach PTA with “Beach SUN Classes” in the comment section. Checks can be left in the Beach School Office.

Reading Help Needed

Beach teachers have expressed a need for volunteer support in Reading. Your help will have a positive impact on Beach students, even if its just an hour a week. If you are interested in working one-on-one with students in our English classes, please contact Megan O'LearyMelanie Hammond or Melinda Mechling. We will provide a mini training in a Reading support program, and are working on setting up a schedule for those interested in volunteering.

  • Check the Lost and Foundfor your missing items located by the cafeteria. The items are really starting to pile up! Please take a minute to check to see if your child's belongings are here. There is also a small lost and found in the annex just inside the main entrance. Remember to always write your child's name inside their belongings!

Beach Community Right Brain Artist Selection
We are excited to begin planning the upcoming artist residency through The Right Brain Initiative! We need your input in selecting an artist/art form for our students to engage with this year.

Our focus is on building visible Beach community.  You can help.  Please complete the survey to give us feedback about the artist selection.

How can I help Beach School?

Thank You for your Generosity
Thank you to all who donated towards the Thanksgiving Gift Cards for Beach families. With your help, the PTA was able to purchase fred meyer gift cards for 25 different families in need  of some extra groceries over the Thanksgiving holiday.

Beach School Bash - Volunteers Needed!

Our auction is the largest fundraiser of the year, bringing in necessary dollars to assist the Beach School community. In the past, funds raised from this event has supported Playworks, SUN, technology enhancements and improving services for students and school staff. This fundraiser, slated for late April 2020, is made possible by a great group of parent volunteers and we need your help. Please email Amber Elf  if you are interested in volunteering or learning more.

Sign-ups/Buy-In Coordinator: This person would assist in promoting the sign-ups/buy-in’s for the auction to include gathering information, inputting information into database, and circling back with participants. Sign-ups are volunteer driven where a teacher/parent agrees to offer an experience and folks sign up for the experience. It is a great way to open the door for more to participate in the auction: I.E. Ms. Frazee hosted an animal sleep over in the library for $5 a stuffed animal. She took pictures of the animals in the library and sent to kids/parents. We are hoping to place the Sign-ups on the Online portion of the auction.

Volunteer Coordinator:This role involves helping to gather and lead the volunteers the night of the auction. This position will have less work during the year and be more time intensive the month of the auction.

Social Media Expert: While we have a team of folks dedicated to producing all communication materials, we need a point person to help with social media and announcements of auction related items and timelines. We have a timeline calendar created, but need that one person to take the lead on launching and announcing the auction to the greater community.

Live Auction Helper: Dawn Myrah is our lead for the live auction and is need of a helper for the evening of the auction. Live Auction includes helping produce the video that is shared, working with the auctioneer, talking points and keep the night running smooth.

Donate K-2nd Boy's Pants or Shorts

Accidents happen.  We are in the season of puddles and there is a need for pants and shorts for the K-2 boys.  If you can contribute, please drop off in the front office or with Megan O'Leary.

Community Event Planner Wanted!

If you are interested in helping plan fun & inclusive community events at Beach, we are looking for someone to join our awesome PTA team! Please email PTA VP Melinda Mechling if interested.

For those of us who don't already have children at Ockley Green, you might have questions about the school and would like to tour the building before the Dec 3 lottery deadline. For those interested in getting a tour:

WHO: Parents interested in sending their child to Ockley

WHAT: Tour of Ockley before lottery deadline

WHEN: Mon/Tue 11/25-26 at 6pm

WHERE: Ockley Green - 6031 N Montana Ave.

Topic Talks with Principal Lisa Hawking

Topic Talks are a continuation of “Coffee with the Principal”.  The title “Topic Talk” better describes what we’ll do and why (described below).  We will also have Cafe en Espanol, scheduled for adjacent Fridays, along with Black Affinity Brunch starting in December

Dates and times for Topic Talks are:

  • December 13th 9-10am
  • January 24, 9-10 a.m.
  • February 14, 9-10 a.m.
  • March 20, 9-10 a.m.
  • April 17, 9-10 a.m.
  • May 22, 9-10 a.m.

Dates for Cafe en Espanol are:

  • December 6
  • January 31
  • February 28
  • April 3
  • May 29

Black Affinity Brunch

  • December 20th

All Cafe en Espanol are facilitated by our wonderful Esther Romero, from 9-10 a.m. in the auditorium.

The goals for Topic Talks and Cafe en Espanol are communication and community building. We want to create a space for parents to receive some information about important school-related topics, and a space to hear from, learn from, and better know those of you who are able to attend.  (We regret this is not a time that works for many parents’ work schedules and hope that we’ll get to connect with you at evening events, around school such as at arrival or dismissal or in other ways-- please reach out if we can answer any questions or support you or your child.)

We would love to learn topics of interest from you. Topic Talk topics I’m planning so far include school survey and assessment data, student assessments overviews (MAP, Smarter Balanced, etc.), Social Emotional Learning, Restorative Justice & Collaborative Problem Solving.  This Friday’s topic is our 2019-20 School Goals including school data and team processes that led to their formation.

At Topic Talks we’ll meet in Circle. Circle work increases the generativity of a group of individuals, helping us find common knowledge and interests, and productive differences, to accomplish shared purposes. We’ll structure the ability for each person to have a turn to speak or listen, and also a structure at closing for collecting additional questions from you that I’ll either be able to answer quickly, or connect with you about later, depending on time.

I hope all parents will feel welcome to join us!

Sincerely, Lisa Hawking
