How can I help Beach School?

Book Fair Volunteers Needed

The Beach Spring Book fair is coming up this March 16-20th, and Ms. Frazee is in need of volunteers. If you have time to help with set appreciated. Check out the sign up here

Beach School Bash Auction - Volunteers Needed!

Our auction is the largest fundraiser of the year, bringing in necessary dollars to assist the Beach School community. In the past, funds raised from this event has supported Playworks, SUN, technology enhancements and improving services for students and school staff. This fundraiser, slated for late April 2020, is made possible by a great group of parent volunteers and we need your help. Please email Amber Elf  if you are interested in volunteering or learning more.

Spring Planting Dinner (formerly Harvest Dinner) Planner Wanted!

If you are interested in helping plan our annual Garden Fundraiser,  Please email Kelly Orehovec kelly.orehovec@gmail.com if interested.  If you don't want to plan and want to help, please also let us know!

Pottery Pick up

Do you recognize any of these? There are still several beautiful pottery pieces that need to be picked up ASAP. Please email Melinda Mechling to arrange a pickup time.

Get to Know your Community

Last Sunday, the native pollinator meadow in our school garden got some love from 12 volunteers from the Annual North American Rewilding Conference put on by non-profit Rewild Portland. The day started with a double rainbow and an acknowledgment of the Chinookan people who have long stewarded this region. We were lucky to have a break from the rain to do some weeding and planting. The ‘weeds' were all edible and medicinal including dandelion, narrow leaf plantain and wild carrot (aka Queen Anne’s lace).

While these species are sometimes considered pesky, they were brought to North America for food and are good at growing in disturbed areas. You might think of them as nature’s band-aids for the soil. The areas that were weeded were then planted with Willamette Valley native wildflower seeds including lupin, columbine and self-heal. Stop by the garden and check out what’s growing! Mark your calendar for our next garden work parties: Sat. 2/22 9 am to noon and Th 2/27, 3-5 pm.

Our school’s Right Brain Initiative (RBI) Team is thrilled to be bringing Alex Addy and his West African Drumming residency to all our students this year!  Each class will have 3 sessions with Alex between Jan 6 and Feb 7, and he will be at our Beach Connects, providing a Community Performance as well as time for kids and families to talk, ask questions and maybe even get to try out the drums a little.  Alex’s residency goal is to teach our students respect for the culture of Ghana, West Africa while sharing specific drumming and musical techniques through the lens of discipline and focus. Simultaneously, our larger residency goal is “making Beach Community visible”; we are partnering with Beach parent photographer Amy Wooley who will take photos of our students during the residency, to enlarge and hang in our hallways. (This residency is funded through our annual “Run for the Arts” which will be back again this spring!)  Other components include K-2 and 3-5 School Assemblies (Feb. 7) and daytime Open-to-All-Beach-Community-Sessions on Monday February 3, during the school day.  Click here for more information about the residency and Alex.

Friday, Feb. 7th 9:40am - 10:30 am performance (Grades 3-5)

 English Classes at Beach

English Classes begin Feb 4th. Every Tue & Thu from 9-1030 in the annex Room A3. These classes are for all adults who want to learn or practice English, and they are also welcome to English speakers who would like to help by participating.

With Esther out we need your help to build connections between English & Spanish speakers!
A) can you help spread the word? We will have a flyer and we ask you to help pass it out!
B) we would love it if you would participate in one of the classes! If you are interested, give Nate your name & #, and we'll connect with you after classes start

Topic Talks with Principal Lisa Hawking

Topic Talks are a continuation of “Coffee with the Principal”.  The title “Topic Talk” better describes what we’ll do and why (described below).  We will also have Cafe en Espanol, scheduled for adjacent Fridays, along with Black Affinity Brunch starting in December

Dates and times for Topic Talks are:

  • February 14, 9-10 a.m.
  • March 20, 9-10 a.m.
  • April 17, 9-10 a.m.
  • May 22, 9-10 a.m.

Dates for Cafe en Espanol are:

  • February 28
  • April 3
  • May 29

All Cafe en Espanol are facilitated by our wonderful Esther Romero, from 9-10 a.m. in the auditorium.

The goals for Topic Talks and Cafe en Espanol are communication and community building. We want to create a space for parents to receive some information about important school-related topics, and a space to hear from, learn from, and better know those of you who are able to attend.  (We regret this is not a time that works for many parents’ work schedules and hope that we’ll get to connect with you at evening events, around school such as at arrival or dismissal or in other ways-- please reach out if we can answer any questions orsupport you or your child.)

We would love to learn topics of interest from you. Topic Talk topics I’m planning so far include school survey and assessment data, student assessments overviews (MAP, Smarter Balanced, etc.), Social Emotional Learning, Restorative Justice & Collaborative Problem Solving.  This Friday’s topic is our 2019-20 School Goals including school data and team processes that led to their formation.

At Topic Talks we’ll meet in Circle. Circle work increases the generativity of a group of individuals, helping us find common knowledge and interests, and productive differences, to accomplish shared purposes. We’ll structure the ability for each person to have a turn to speak or listen, and also a structure at closing for collecting additional questions from you that I’ll either be able to answer quickly, or connect with you about later, depending on time.

I hope all parents will feel welcome to join us!

Sincerely, Lisa Hawking

Caring Communities at Beach

2nd Annual Beach Community "Beach Connects" was a hit!

Our goal with Beach Connects is to bring the entire Beach community together in a fun and relaxed way. I think it was a slam-dunk!

With lots of pizza and snacks to go around, the free-throw contest (congrats to Sammy and Dustin for winning!), guessing games, and drumming all made for a great night.

We hope to make this a regular event at Beach! Thank you to our wonderful teachers and support staff for putting stars in so many kids eyes last night. And a huge thank you to Alex Addy and his West African Drumming residency for showing our community so much rhythm and spirit last night. There wasn't a still body in sight! Please join him on February 3rd for some more drumming if you want to learn!

Here's to the next one!

At Girls on the Run, we inspire girls to recognize their inner strength and celebrate what makes them one of a kind. Trained coaches lead small teams through our research-based curricula which includes dynamic discussions, activities and running games. Over the course of the ten-week program, girls in 3rd-8th grade develop essential skills to help them navigate their worlds and establish a lifetime appreciation for health and fitness. The program culminates with girls positively impacting their communities through a service project and being physically and emotionally prepared to complete a celebratory 5K event.

At Beach, GOTR will be a partnership with the SUN program in the Spring term for Grades 3-5.  Practices will be twice per week, tentatively scheduled for Mondays and Thursdays.

Families can register girls online at http://www.girlsontherunpdx.org

Online Registration opens January 15th. We need 8 participants signed up by February 21st to move forward with the program.

The cost is  $195/girl. Sliding scale and payment plans are available.  We also need 2-3 volunteers to serve as coaches! Deadline is January 31st.  Requirements are 21+ (female for the head coach, male volunteers can serve as assistant coaches).  A background check and CPR certification required.  Training will be provided.

A huge thank you to Ockley Green's amazing Principal Kristina Howard.
